MONICA MINSHEW COWSERT

Monica has always been surrounded by the arts in one form or another. She had the opportunity to study art history in Vienna, Austria. She is heavily influenced by the art and colors of Mexico where she lived and took art classes for a summer in San Miguel de Allende. While there she also took photography classes at the Instituto de Allende.

Monica’s earlier years were spent studying music, she played the harp from a young age and continues to this day.

Monica explores art techniques with classes en plein air, encaustic, and mixed media while keeping oil painting as her focus. Some of her latest works and works in progress can be seen on Instagram.

In her works, picturesque landscapes, whimsical cityscapes, beautiful birds, flowers, and animals are all brought to life with contrasting and harmonious colors and bold compositions. These influences and her love of nature are clear in the art she creates. Monica’s vibrant color palette and the layering of those colors create a distinctive personal style, emanate joy and peace, and express a happy spirit.

Monica lives and works in Dallas, Texas and is a native of Sherman, Texas. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Modern Language Studies from Texas Christian University.

Monica speaks fluent English and tries like hell to speak Spanish and German.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My subject matter is derived from what I see and feel. Like life however, it is layered, at times completely unorganized, and changes during the process many times. For me personally the painting process has been healing and joyful. Through my artwork, I try to bring the outside in, and while I make no attempt to portray my subjects in an exact likeness, I do try to aesthetically honor the nature that has inspired me in the first place.
